Hints for packing

I've learned a lot of things over the years for how to successfully plan and pack for a trip over seas.
It doesn't mean it is easy... I have a favorite pair of high heels I'll never wear,  I always want to take a blow dryer to straighten my hair but it takes up too much room... Then again the amount of gel I'd need takes up as much... And so forth.
So here are a few hints for packing.  Keep in mind I stay in hostels and at friends houses and am looking to rent an apartment in Peru.   Without knowing what all will be furnished.

Here we go;
*  take a small bag of powdered detergent for each two weeks of travel.
      *two purposes.. When you are getting really tired of the same clothes, the scent does smell refreshing when you open the bag you are so tired of carrying.   Also,  you never know how much detergent will be (I've paid eight bucks for a single use tide in Europe before).. Also good for hostel sink underwear washing projects.

* take a small bottle of febreeze.
         *same purpose. Refresh your tired clothes &  attempt to make your shoes bearable for the person next to you.

*try on everything. If it doesn't fit perfect or a little loosely it is out.
     *if traveling at high elevations with blistering day sun and cold nights,  don't take it unless you have a long sleeved shirt for under it,  or a cardigan and scarf to wear with it.  And all of this must fit under your single coat.

*lay out your clothes... If it can't be made into at least three semi different outfits,  it is out.
        *i live in a cold climate so I love buying summer clothes.. But I don't bring them unless they can work for a day tour,  a night out,  and as a thermal base layer... Ie no crazy patterns or lace handi work that forms lumps.

*if it has to be ironed... It's out.

*if you have to have a special bra for it... It's out.  If you require a strapless bra & have space go for it... But when I run out of room these things are on the cutting block.

*don't be afraid to look like a hobo & use the daisy chain on your pack in the airport... My biggest shoes are my hiking shoes/trainers... And I am not letting them take up space nor wearing them for longer than I need to.

*if you are hostelling,  get a dark colored king size pillow case.  Put a small to medium pillow in it wrapped with a towel.  You'll want these comforts. If you are renting a place like me... Take a full/double fitted sheet.  I've never done this but in general, goods abroad are more expensive and not high quality. Also can work as a towel in a pinch or an extra blanket or airport blanket. Okay,  with that said I'm thinking I want a flat sheet.

* take a supply of band aids & nip a hotel sewing kit. You've seen Lost. Right?

*have a few extra ziplock bags.
*have a dummy wallet semi hidden but easy to find with about $40. Separate & hide your travelers checks,  emergency cc,  and other important things. Don't travel with valuables.
